Sounds, sight words, picture vocabulary, simple sentences, tiny stories, and mixed review — through a gentle underwater adventure.
Captain Reef Junior is designed for short, happy practice sessions at home or in class, with progress saved only on the device. It follows a structured Pre-A1/A1 scope and sequence across six skill islands, so a few playful minutes a day add up to real early-reading practice.
Designed for early-primary ESL/EAL learners; CEFR-aware Pre-A1/A1 progression; suitable for Cycle 1-style foundational English practice. This is an international early-literacy game — it is not an official UAE MOE curriculum and makes no claim of MOE alignment, audit approval, or government endorsement.
What it is
An early-English literacy and vocabulary adventure for children of about ages 5–8, suitable for ESL/EAL learners. It builds foundational phonics, high-frequency words, picture vocabulary, sentence frames, and short reading — through play, not pressure.
Children practise small literacy skills through repeated, low-pressure games — short rounds of about 2–4 minutes, with gentle feedback and pearls to collect.
The journey moves from sounds and words to sentences, stories, and mixed review — a structured Pre-A1 to A1 sequence across six islands and thirty levels.
Parents and teachers can see real progress in the grown-up area, but the child is never placed in public competition. Progress guides encouragement.
It is not an exam platform, not a formal curriculum replacement, and not an official MOE curriculum map. Think of it as friendly, structured practice that sits alongside — and supports — a child's school learning.
How a child plays
Every visit to Bubble Bay follows the same gentle rhythm. Six simple steps keep young learners confident and in control.

Six skill islands on the reef map, unlocked as skills grow.
A quick round of 8–12 items, about 2–4 minutes long.

Treasure Review gently brings back words that need another look.
Earn pearls, stamps, and stickers — trying again is celebrated.
⏱️ Short sessions of 5–10 minutes are plenty for young learners — stop while it still feels fun.
The structure behind the play
Six islands × five levels = 30 guided levels, progressing from Pre-A1 to A1. Each level carries a child-friendly goal, a teacher learning outcome, and the evidence it generates. Filter by skill or CEFR band, or print the table for your records.
| Island | # | Level | Skill focus | CEFR | Child goal | Teacher learning outcome | Evidence generated |
|---|
Dive the reef
Each island is a station on the reef, targeting one early-literacy skill. Together they carry a child from first sounds to reading a tiny story and reviewing it all.
Inside the game
One skill can be practised many ways. Modes keep repetition fresh, so children meet the same words through different friendly challenges.
Not random words
Captain Reef Junior is built from linked banks of original, child-safe content — not a random word list. Phonics, high-frequency words, picture vocabulary, sentence frames, and tiny stories all feed one another, and mixed review brings back what needs another look.
Grounded in well-established early-literacy practice — offered plainly, without overclaiming.
Children recall answers rather than just re-reading, which helps words stick.
Each word appears across levels and modes, not once and gone.
Arabic support lowers the load so meaning comes first, then the English word.
Pictures anchor new vocabulary to something concrete and memorable.
Brief sessions suit young attention spans and keep practice happy.
Mistakes are quiet cues to try again, not red flags.
Treasure Review revisits weak and due items across every skill.
The same word in phonics and in vocabulary is tracked as two skills.
What grown-ups can see
The grown-up area reports progress in plain language, so a parent or teacher can understand a child's early reading in a minute — and print it when needed.
A child does not master a word just by seeing it once. Mastery reflects repeated correct answers and recent accuracy across real practice:
4+ correct answers · across 2+ activities · and 2+ sessions · at 75%+ recent accuracy
Progress is also skill-aware: the same word practised as a sound and practised as a picture word is tracked separately, so strengths and gaps stay honest. A level completes at 60% in a round (★ 50% · ★★ 75% · ★★★ 95%) and unlocks the next.
“Progress is designed to guide encouragement, not to shame mistakes.”
